Colombo: Wicket-keeper batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana, one of Sri Lanka's heroes in its 1996 World Cup triumph, was on Tuesday recalled for the upcoming One-day tournament in Australia. The Sri Lankans, led by Sanath Jayasuriya, leave late on Tuesday to compete in the world series tri-series against England and hosts Australia starting on Friday. The 34-year-old Kaluwitharana was omitted from Sri Lanka's provisional 30-man squad for the 2003 World Cup, but doors opened for him when veteran Aravinda de Silva pulled out from the early matches in the tri-series. Since being discarded from World Cup plans, Kaluwitharana has hit five half- centuries in domestic One-day matches. Left-arm fast bowler Nuwan Zoysa, who like Kaluwitharana has not been considered since the England tour in May, was also recalled for the Australian trip. Star spinner Muthiah Muralitharan, who underwent a hernia operation in Australia, will miss the early matches but will be fit to play later in the series, officials said. "Murali needs about four weeks rest, he will be focussing on the World Cup so we are keen to give him time," said Sri Lankan cricket chief Hemaka Amarasuriya.
