WC crisis: New Zealand refuses to play in Kenya
Auckland: The New Zealand cricket team announced Friday it would not play its World Cup match in Kenya on February 21 due to fears for the safety and security of players. "The New Zealand Cricket team will not be playing in Kenya," New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden said in a statement after a day-long meeting. "This decision was made by the New Zealand Cricket Board after reviewing all the evidence regarding the safety and security of playing the World Cup match scheduled for February 21. "The Board has concluded that on the basis of the information currently available the safety and security risk for our players is too high." Snedden said the International Cricket Council security delegation to Kenya had received information that there was a "terrorist threat" in the East African country, specifically the capital of Nairobi. "The information received by the ICC security delegation to Kenya made it clear that there is a tangible terrorist threat in Nairobi and the board has seen nothing which changes that," he said. "The New Zealand Cricket Board will give notice to the ICC that it does not believe that the decision taken by the ICC last night was reasonable," Snedden said. "This is a matter which will now be resolved through legal processes," he added, without giving further details.
