Nairobi: The Kenyan government has assured the visiting delegation of the International Cricket Council (ICC) that the country would provide maximum security for teams from New Zealand and Sri Lanka for two World Cup matches next month. The eight-man delegation is led by ICC marketing manager Campbell Jamieson, representing chief executive Malcolm Speed, who was not able to travel to Nairobi due to other commitments. The ICC delegation met new Kenyan Sports Minister Najib Balala in Nairobi on Monday, who expressed the government's strong commitment to the hosting of the matches. "The government, no doubt, perceives this event as one of national importance and would do all to ensure that anything, both real and imagined, that would stand on the way to the success of this event are removed." Balala told the delegation that the security concerns following the November 2002 terrorist bombing in Mombasa had been addressed by the country's security organs. "It is the desire of the government that this event is hosted successfully so as to put Kenya in a good position to bid for future World Cup events and to popularise the game in the country," added Balala. The delegation, which includes representatives of the New Zealand and Sri Lanka cricket boards and security officials from South Africa, is scheduled to hold more meetings with the Kenya Cricket Association (KCA) and local security officials, to discuss the security arrangements before holding a press conference on Tuesday.
