East London: Boeta Dippenaar made 80 to steer hosts South Africa out of early trouble and post 254 for eight against unfancied Canada in the World Cup match at Buffalo Park on Thursday.
South Africa, sent to bat, crashed to 23 for three after losing leading batsmen Herschelle Gibbs, Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis in the space of three overs. Canadian opening bowler Ashish Patel, playing in his first One-day International after being overlooked for Canada's four previous matches, and veteran Davis Joseph gained awkward movement at the start. Dippenaar and opening batsman Graeme Smith (63) put on 109 for the fourth wicket but South Africa was unable to dominate a steady bowling attack until some late hitting by Shaun Pollock, Andrew Hall and Makhaya Ntini (14) enabled it to score 46 off the last three overs. Having gone into the match with an all-pace attack in a likely precursor of their tactics for the key match against Sri Lanka on Monday, South Africa found it difficult to score against off spinner John Davison and left-arm spinner Barry Seebaran, who conceded 45 and 43 runs respectively in 10-over spells. Davison claimed the wicket of Smith, bowling the left-hander with an arm ball after he had made 63 off 79 balls with six fours. Dippenaar, who has yet to make a one-day international century, missed another opportunity when he spooned a catch to short fine-leg in the 46th over after making 80 off 118 balls with seven fours. Patel took two for 17 in a five-over opening spell before surprisingly being taken off. He came back later for two single overs which cost 10 and 14 runs.
