Love for Saurav turns to anger as fans burn effigy

Kolkata: Continuing to vent their anger on the dismal performance of the Indian team in the World Cup so far, dismayed fans on Monday burnt an effigy of skipper Saurav Ganguly and torched pictures of other team members, alleging they were ''more interested in doing advertisements than playing the game''.

Holding aloft posters crying ''down down, with the Indian players', "let them do only ads, no need for them to play", a mob of around 50 youth poured kerosene on the effigy and the cardboard pictures of stars like Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag shouting slogans against them. Ganguly, the local boy, bore the brunt of the assault, signalling the Kolkatans' frustration with the southpaw for the prolonged drought of runs from his blade. The youth, mostly members of a club 'Pradip Sikha' at Park Circus in the southern part of the city, expressed their dismay at the showing of the squad. ''They have let us down. They don't care for our sentiments,'' said one of the youth. At the upmarket Gariahat area, irate fans garlanded the posters of the stars with shoes.
