Potchefstroom: South Africa's joy at crushing Kenya by 10-wickets on Wednesday was cut short when it was revealed that Jonty Rhodes had broken a bone in his hand that could rule him out of the World Cup. Rhodes, a key figure for the hosts as one of the best fielders in cricket, was hurt during the match and broke the bone in his right hand. He immediately left to see a specialist in Johannesburg where the full damage would be assessed. It was the second scare in the space of three days for the 32-year-old Rhodes who had to undergo an X-ray on Monday after aggravating an old injury to his right index finger while fielding against the West Indies in his team's opening match on Sunday. As a precaution, he took the field here on Wednesday with his hand heavily strapped. Rhodes, who made his debut in 1991-92, was playing in his 245th One-dayer and boasts a career record of almost 6,000 runs at an average of 35.31 with two centuries. He made his name with his fielding exploits at backward point during the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and has maintained his status as one of the world's greatest fielders for more than a decade.
