Colombo: Zimbabwe skipper Heath Streak suffered a suspected fractured shoulder when a three-wheel taxi in which he was travelling collided with a van on Monday, a police source said. A member of the police team detailed to guard the cricketers said that Streak had left his hotel without notifying the bodyguards deployed to protect visiting players.
"We provide security for the entire team, but in this case he had left the hotel without informing our people," a police official at the team hotel said. Indian-made three-wheel taxis offer an unsteady ride, but they are a popular mode of transport because of lower fares. They also contribute to a high percentage of fatal accidents on Sri Lankan roads and there have been calls to ban them being imported. It was not immediately clear why Streak was travelling in a three-wheeler when the organisers had arranged coaches for the visiting teams. Last week, police complained to the International Cricket Council (ICC) that some players were violating strict guide lines put in place so that cricketers do not contact bookmakers. More than 300 plain-clothed police are being deployed for the largely covert operations during the tournament, officials said. This is in addition to uniformed police for usual crowd control at match venues in the capital.
