Colombo: Australian batsman Damien Martyn, who top scored against New Zealand, will miss Thursday's league match against Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy at the Sinhalese Sports Club Stadium on Wednesday due to a hip injury. Martyn, who top scored with 73 in Australia's win against New Zealand in the first game, strained his hip during the match, captain Ricky Ponting told reporters.
"We will see if he can get over it, with the semi-finals coming up," Ponting said. Australia has virtually assured itself of a place in the semi-final, which will be confirmed if it beats Bangladesh on Thursday- that again is almost ensured going by the form of its players and the status of the opposition. Jimmy Maher will replace Martyn in the side and play at number six, with left-hander Michael Bevan moving up the order to number four, Ponting said. This will be the only change in the Australian line-up from the team that did duty against New Zealand. The Aussies won by a handsome margin of 164 runs. Ponting said he knew very little about the Bangladesh side, but added that they would be playing it like any other game. The two teams have met once in the 1999 World Cup, which was won comfortably by Australia. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh team management will leave out 18-year-old batsman Mohammed Ashraful from the side with Javed Omar playing in his place. Bangladesh has been struggling at the international level, and has won only three One-day Internationals, including one against Pakistan in the World Cup.
