Gayle returns to lead West Indies

Gayle
Brisbane: Chris Gayle has been reappointed as the West Indies captain to lead a full-strength squad for the three-test tour of Australia.

Gayle and senior members of team withdrew from the Windies home series against Bangladesh in July and the Champions Trophy in September due to a long-standing contract conflict with the West Indies Cricket Board.

Only four players from the last two tournaments could make it to the current West Indies squad.

Gayle, who has played 82 tests, is set to open the batting with 19-year-old Adrian Barath, the only player in the squad without international experience.

The return of key players should help settle a West Indies side that suffered heavy defeats both in the series with Bangladesh and subsequent Champions Trophy.

During that period, the only major match won by the team was a Twenty20 international against Bangladesh in St Kitts.

And the onus will be on Gayle and his players to restore the reputation of Caribbean cricket.

But West Indies have not won a series in Australia since 1992/3 and the odds will be heavily against them doing so this time as most of their players have not played international cricket since July.
