Yuvraj, Ojha steer India to victory

Trent Bridge: India announced their presence in the 2009 T20 World Cup with a performance here good enough to excite the imagination of everyone who yearns for them to repeat 2007 glory .

India registered comfortable 25-run victory against Bangladesh in their opening Group A match in the World Twenty20 championship at Trent Bridge here Saturday. Pragyan Ojhas dream spell ( 4/21) ensured India's victory against Bangladesh.


Electing to bat first India scored a massive 180 for five, thanks to a brutal knock by Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj hit four sixes and three fours from only 18 balls to score 41 runs.

Gambhir and Rohit Sharma (36), who opened the batting in absence of injured Virender Sehwag, scored 59 runs for ths first wicket.

Rohit, who smashed three boundaries and two sixes, was bowled by Shakib after surviving a stumping chance off the previous delivery.

Irfan Pathan (11) hit a four and a six off the last three deliveries he faced.

Bangladesh made a good start chasing 181 but were pegged by the Indian spinners.

The debutant picked up the key scalp of Junaid Siddique after the opening batsman had belted 41 from just 22 deliveries to raise hopes of another upset in the tournament following Holland's shock success over England.

Scorecard

But, with the run rate always climbing, the middle order never managed to get going against the spin pairing of Ojha and Harbahan Singh.

Bangladesh ended up closer than expected to their target thanks to some lusty late blows from Naeem Islam (28 off 17), though India were always in control.
