Kolkata: While the Dilip Vengsarkar-led selection committee did not find Sourav Ganguly good enough for a place in the Irani Trophy, the former captain is pinning hopes on East Zone's newly appointed selector Raja Venkat to make it to the Test side for the upcoming Test series against Australia.
Hopeful to be retained in India's Test squad for the series against Australia that begins from October 9, Ganguly said Venkat's appointment will give a major thrust to Bengal cricket.
When asked whether Venkat will push for his selction in the Test side, Ganguly said, ''Let's hope he tries. I hope to do well (in the Australia series) if selected... If not then let's see,'' he said at a function here.
''Venkat's appointment as the national selector from East Zone is really good. It's a great thing for Bengal cricket. The state will definitely get help from him,'' Ganguly added.
The former India captain further asserted that the Aussies might find it difficult to trouble the strong Indian batting without a quality spinner in their ranks.
However, the stylish left-hander said the series would be a close one with some close finishes too.
''India-Australia series have always been exciting. This time, I don't see any difference. It is difficult to predict who will come out winners but it will be very close finish.
''Our spinners will be an advantage. We hope to do well in the series,'' Ganguly said.
