PCB suspends dope-tainted Mohd Asif

Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday suspended fast bowler Mohammad Asif from all competition until an inquiry is completed by India, where he tested positive for a banned substance.

''PCB hereby suspends Mohammad Asif with immediate effect from participating in cricket including its organization, administration and promotion conducted by or under the auspices of PCB, ICC or ICC members until final decision which includes appeal," PCB said in a statement issued on last evening.

''PCB has a zero tolerance towards doping and condemns any such practice in all forms and manifestations,'' a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). ''PCB is WADA compliant and has a comprehensive Anti Doping Policy which extends to all cricketers,'' statement added.

"The inquiry will be conducted by the Indian Premier League doping tribunal headed by Sunny Gavaskar and whatever decision they take against Asif, we would back it," PCB COO Naghmi said in a media conference.

The IPL on Monday named Asif as the player who tested positive during the Twenty20 league held from April to June.

The 25-year-old has denied using banned substances and has asked for a test of his 'B' sample.

If the 'B' sample is also found to be positive, then according to WADA regulations, Asif will face a life ban for a second offence.

He was banned in 2006 for one year after testing positive for a banned steroid- a decision which was later overturned.
