Islamabad: Pakistan's new cricket captain Rashid Latif on Wednesday hinted that there would be a major revamp in the team, saying some of the senior members of the World Cup squad would be dropped. Some of the senior players would be dropped in favour of new players for the forthcoming tri-nation Sharjah Cup beginning on April 1, Latif said after replacing Waqar Younis as captain and urged cricket fans to be patient with the team during the "rebuilding process". "The nation must remain tolerant and should not expect overnight results from the new-look Pakistan team," Latif, who reclaimed the job after four years, told reporters at his residence in Karachi after hearing the announcement. The wicket-keeper-batsman said he would meet new coach Javed Miandad and new selection committee chairman Aamir Sohail to discuss the composition of the team. "It is going to be a difficult task but I have accepted the challenge with great responsibility," Latif was quoted as saying by the official APP news agency. Pakistan, which exited from the World Cup with its worst ever showing since the inaugural edition going out in the preliminary round, will play against Sri Lanka and South Africa in the Sharjah Cup. On Pakistan's failure to qualify for the Super Six stage, Latif said he too was "disappointed" but looked forward to rebuild the team. "The team failed in the World Cup due to poor batting, bowling and fielding efforts. My goal is to remove the deficiencies." "I have made some plans in my mind and am working on it," Latif said. Latif, who has played 34 Tests and 149 One-day Internationals, said he would speak freely on team selection. "I will speak freely and give my recommendations in selection in the larger interest of the team," said Latif who had created a storm by raising the issue of match- fixing in Pakistan cricket three years ago. In his previous stint as skipper, Latif led the team in 13 ODIs.
