Cape Town: Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuirya was his side's hero and villain in a tense World Cup day-night contest against the West Indies at Newlands on Friday.
Jayasuriya top-scored with 66 in a Sri Lankan total of 228 for six, but was involved in two run-outs and failed to take advantage of a let-off when he should have been given out caught behind on 60. Sri Lanka was struggling at 178 for six after 43 overs but left-handers Russel Arnold and Chaminda Vaas added an unbeaten 50 off the last seven overs to give it a competitive total. Marvan Atapattu was the first run-out victim in the fourth over when Jayasuriya called him for a quick single after pushing a ball from Pedro Collins to the leg- side. Collins followed up quickly and hit the stumps with Atapattu, slow out of his crease, just short. Jayasuriya was guilty of failing to stay alert when Aravinda de Silva, who looked in superb form, was run out for 13. De Silva drove the ball into the covers and Jayasuriya settled for two runs, failing to notice the chance of an extra run when Wavell Hinds' throw from the boundary went over wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs. De Silva set off for the run and both batsmen were at the same end when Shivnarine Chanderpaul's throw hit the stumps at the other end. The West Indies was unlucky when Jayasuriya hooked at Mervyn Dillon and the ball looped off his glove to wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs only for umpire Dave Orchard to give him not out. Six runs later he was caught at deep mid-wicket off Chris Gayle for 66, made off 99 balls with four fours. Jayasuriya won the toss and decided to bat on a pitch which has favoured the side batting first in 14 out of 18 day-night internationals at Newlands. It is a crucial match for both sides. The West Indies will probably be eliminated if it loses. Sri Lanka will have to beat hosts South Africa in Durban on Monday if it stumbled against the West Indies. Copyright AFP 2001
