Australia's Waugh no closer to decision on Test career
Sydney: Steve Waugh said Tuesday he was no closer to making a decision about his Test cricket career. Despite last month indicating an answer would come within weeks, the Test skipper remained undecided about leading the Australian team to the West Indies in April. "I know that I said I would take a couple of weeks to make one but I've stretched that into a month and a bit longer," Waugh said on Tuesday. "I haven't really felt like making a decision at this stage and I don't want to be pressured into saying yes or no. I want to make sure it's the right decision and it hasn't come to me yet." Waugh could make the decision on his own terms, after his glorious century against England in the fifth Ashes Test here over the New Year. "As a sportsman you are always thinking the next innings could be the perfect innings. But if I looked back on my career and I can say that Sydney was a perfect day then I would be happy with that," Waugh said. "I don't think it can get any better than that." Waugh, left out of Australia's One-day squad for the World Cup, said playing for his state New South Wales since the Ashes series had rejuvenated his batting. This month Waugh scored 211 against Victoria in a Sheffield Shield game and last weekend was man-of-the-match in a domestic One-dayer against South Australia with 71 runs off 58 balls. "I just want to go out there and play my shots and play as if I was just starting out the game," he said. "There were a lot of years in the Australian team where I think I had to bat in difficult situations and I probably didn't play the way that I did when I was 19. I sort of had to dig in. "But now I've got a bit more freedom and I want to go out there and express myself the way I did 15 years ago."
