Waugh struck on head by wild throw, gets nasty scare
Melbourne: Australian Test captain Steve Waugh had a nasty scare when he was struck in the temple region by an errant throw while fielding for New South Wales (NSW) in a Sheffield Shield match on Friday. Waugh, fielding in the covers, was struck flush by a wayward Stuart Clark throw. He left the Melbourne Cricket Ground immediately and was taken to hospital for a precautionary scan. NSW team physio Pat Farhart said late on Friday that Waugh underwent several scans which confirmed there were no fractures. The scans also determined there was no bleeding of the brain. "Steve suffered a concussion-type injury," said Farhart. "There was no loss of consciousness. Steve will be assessed tomorrow morning by the ACB's doctor Trefor James to decide whether he takes part in the final day." Waugh on Thursday scored 211 in his team's first innings total of 544 for eight declared with Victoria 375 for six in reply at stumps on the third day.
