Queensland whips South Australia despite Blewett ton
Brisbane: Despite another century at the Gabba Ground by former Test batsman Greg Blewett, Queensland recorded its fifth consecutive victory of the Sheffield Shield season on Wednesday. The reigning Shield champion won by 208 runs, with paceman Michael Kasprowicz taking 5 for 44 as South Australia was dismissed for 200 in its second innings. Blewett smacked 135 -- his fifth first-class century on the ground -- but the home team accounted for his teammates cheaply, extending its competition lead to six points. Queensland now look set to qualify for its fifth straight final in March. Opening batsman Clinton Perren (224) and fast bowler Joe Dawes, who claimed match figures of 10 for 135, were named joint men-of-the-match for helping Queensland overturn a first-innings deficit of 79. Blewett defied the Queensland bowlers for five hours. Opening bowler Michael Kasprowicz became the second Queenslander to claim 400 first- class wickets for his State. He now has a tally of 404, behind only former Test speedster Carl Rackemann (425).
