'A good pace bowler will comeback on his performance'
Coimbatore: Former India captain Kapil Dev on Saturday discounted views expressed in certain quarters that only a select few fast bowlers were getting 'comeback' chances to represent the country in both versions of the game. To persistent queries from reporters here that only speedsters from either North or West zones were being given comeback chances, Kapil said critics should view India as a whole, and not as South or East. "If any speedster is good, he will definitely come back by his performance," he said. He reiterated the same views when his attention was drawn to allegations that pacemen like Tinu Yohannan, Balaji and Kumaran (all from South) had not been given adequate chances, On shifting Sachin Tendulkar to his original opening slot, Kapil said Sachin should take the responsibility to win matches, "from whichever slot he is asked to bat". Asked about Rahul Dravid donning the role of both batsman and wicket-keeper, he said 100 people would have as many opinions on selection. On India's prospects in the World Cup, in the light of its recent performance in New Zealand, he said, "They (Indian cricketers) played bad cricket. But it is over now. I wish they become positive and play better cricket." Asked about India playing Pakistan in Dubai, he said the government policy was bigger than one's views. "I have played my part. Now I am an old man," he replied when asked if he was willing to don the mantle of captain again. On whether he was ready to become the Indian coach, Kapil, here to give tips to budding cricketers, said, "I am happy to train the youngsters to become good all- rounders." Extras:
