Sydney: Shane Warne should miss World Cup unless he is 100 per cent fit, according to his Test skipper Steve Waugh.
Warne, out after dislocating his shoulder in last Sunday's One-day International against England, is racing to be fit for cricket's showpiece event, which starts in South Africa in February. But Waugh believes the selectors should take no risks with the leg spinning wizard despite Warne's record and reputation in the Limited Overs form of the game. "South Africa would certainly not like to see Shane there but he's really got to be fit," Waugh said on Saturday. "There's no point sending him if he's half-fit or if he's not 100 per cent and I am sure he won't do that." Warne, who has taken 288 wickets in 191 One-day games for Australia, underwent surgery this week on his right shoulder. The initial diagnosis indicated he would be back bowling within four to six weeks, leaving him little time to regain full fitness with Australia scheduled to open their World Cup on February 11 against Pakistan in Johannesburg. However, it has been suggested selectors should name the 33-year-old in Australia's 15-man squad even if he is less than 100 percent, a notion Waugh rejects. "The only person who knows the answer to that is Shane. I can't answer that, the experts can't answer that. The only guy who will know whether he is right or not is Shane," Waugh said. "He has a lot of pride in his own performance. He won't go to the World Cup if he's not right. But he'll do the hard work to try to get there, but it's just whether he has enough time."
