Kochi: Cricket Legend Kapil Dev on Wednesday strongly advocated the need to reduce matches, especially One-dayers, to give adequate rest to the players.
'The Indian cricketers were not getting sufficient leisure as the cricket season stretches up to 10 months, which was very heavy on them. "They get only a few days' time to rest and relax with their families. This needs to be changed," Kapil Dev, who is here in connection with the launch of two wheeler 'Kinetic Boss' told reporters. "During the off season, cricketers should go in for Golf and Football, which would help them to develop their muscles and be athletic," he said. On the proposal to start a fast bowling Academy, Kapil said BCCI should take initiative in the project and he and other former bowlers like B S Bedi and Prasanna would give all support. "The players alone cannot start an academy like this," he said. Describing Virender Sehwag as a promising player of the Indian team, Kapil said he had abundant natural talent. On Kerala speedster Tinu Yohannan, he said "Tinu had to learn a lot of things to secure his position in the team." Asked about the Indian prospects if three spinners were included in world cup team, he said it was 'silly' to have three spinners as South Africa had fast wickets. Kapil said the media had given him a lot of respect, but a section of the Fourth Estate had a tendency to go in for 'stories' instead of 'news'. This was irresponsible journalism, he said adding it should be curbed.
