Punjab wins Polly Umrigar Trophy on first innings lead
Mumbai: North Zone champions Punjab won the under-15 all India knock-out tournament for the Polly Umrigar Trophy by virtue of 166-run first innings lead over West Zone Champion Mumbai after the three-day match ended in a draw at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Punjab, replying to the hosts' first innings score of 171 all out, scored a mammoth 337 all out off 109.1 overs in 417 minutes. Resuming at its overnight score of 310 for nine, the visitors added another 27 runs on Sunday with the two not out batsmen Gajinder Singh (35) and last man Vivektas Singh (24 not out) adding 59 valuable runs for the last wicket in 18 overs. Top order batsmen Gurkirat Singh (46), Sumit Sharma (103) and Gaurav Gambhir (68) had helped Punjab post a big total. In its second innings, Mumbai was in danger of conceding an innings win when it was tottering at 80 for four off 37.4 overs. However, Swapnil Kule (62 not out) along with left-hander Nikhil Patil (41) and Oninder Singh (27) helped the hosts finish on 176 for six off 82 overs to force a draw. Former Indian Test star Polly Umrigar, who was the chief guest, gave away the trophy to the winners.
