Di Venuto's century puts Tasmania on verge of lead versus Western Australia Perth (Australia): Dashing Tasmanian batsman Michael Di Venuto emerged from the doldrums to crack a century, which carried his side to the brink of its first Sheffield Shield points of the season on Monday.
In reply to Western Australia's first innings 255, Tasmania had reached 253 for four wickets at stumps on the second day at the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) ground, with Scott Mason (37 not out) and Daniel Marsh (35 not out) at the crease. Di Venuto, 28, had a life on 10 when Kade Harvey dropped him in the gully and he edged the ball in the air through a vacant second slip off fast bowler Paul Wilson at 83. He made the most of his good fortune as he fashioned his first Shield century of the 2002-03 season in scoring 101 from 171 balls in just under four hours, with 17 fours. Di Venuto received good support from Michael Dighton (41). It was Di Venuto's fourth Shield century in Perth and his 10th in the inter-state contest.
