Pune: A scintillating century by middle order batsman Abhijeet Kale (102) and a good performance by Sagar Shah (85) helped Maharashtra defeat Baroda by five wickets in the West Zone One-day Ranji Trophy match at Deccan Gymkhana on Saturday. Electing to bat, Baroda made 260 for nine in its allotted 50 overs with opener Satyajit Parab scoring 72 runs. Connor Williams (42) and Nayan Mongia (46) also made useful contributions. Chasing the target, Maharashtra started on the shaky note losing openers in quick succession. Opener Trigune was sent to the pavilion by Rakesh Patel when he had just opened his account (1), while Niranjan Godbole was out on 27. However, Kale and Shah showed good batting skills and counterbalanced the bad start the hosts had. Kale hit one six and 12 boundaries, while Shah hammered 10 hits to the fence. Captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar also had to leave the crease within 11 minutes of his stay when he had just scored one run. Ranjit Khirid (28) and Kashinath Khadkikar (2) were the not out batsmen. For Baroda Rakesh Patel took three wickets while Irfan Pathan (Jr) took one.
