Centuries galore at SZ ODIs; Goa, K'taka, TN win

Bangalore: Goa upsets Andhra by 119 runs, while defending champions Karnataka, riding on a century by Rowland Barrington, inflicted an ignominious 157 runs defeat on Kerala in the South Zone Limited Overs tournament for the Subbaiah Pillai Trophy, which started on Friday.

In the other match of the day, an enterprising knock of 103 with 12 fours and a six by S Sriram enabled Tamil Nadu defeat Hyderabad by six wickets. Opting to bat, Goa piled up 284 for six wickets in 50 overs with Mandar Phadke top- scoring 79. He was ably supported by Swapnil Asnodikar (73) and Avdhut Amonkar (50). Shahabuddin was the pick of the Andhra bowlers taking three wickets for 35 runs while Shyam Sunder claimed two wickets. In reply, troubled by Goa bowlers, Andhra was bundled out for 165 in 41.4 overs. For the losers, Venugopal Rao (32) was the leading scorer and their batting display was nothing to write home about. Goa's Sayed Khalid and Shadab Jakati scalped three wickets apiece. The Karnataka-Kerala encounter was one-sided to say the least. The hosts, looking for a hat-trick after winning the last two editions at Chennai and Vishkhapatnam, put into bat, hammered a hapless Kerala attack to shreds and amassed 345 for five in 50 overs. Continuing his good run in the season, Barrington hit 109 with 11 fours while skipper J Arun Kumar hit 58 and Thilak Naidu 77 as Karnataka dominated its opponents. Sreekumar Nair took two wickets for Kerala which in reply was dismissed for 188 runs with a ball to spare. B K Venkatesh Prasad was most impressive returning with figures of 9-2-17-3, while Sunil Joshi and Udit Patel took two wickets apiece. For Kerala, Ajay Kudva top-scored with 64, while Sreekumar Nair made 60 but other batsmen failed to tick. The Tamil Nadu-Hyderabad tie was one-sided as well. Sent into bat, Hyderabad made a modest 205 all out in 49 overs with useful contribution from D Vinay Kumar (54) and Arjun Yadav (47) but the total was not just enough given Tamil Nadu's formidable batting line-up. Tamil Nadu reached the target in just 40 overs with Sriram shining with the bat. Hemang Badani chipped with an unbeaten 35. For Hyderabad, Ghouse Baba and Fayaz took two wickets each.
