Chennai: Despite an unbeaten 110 by Sushil Gaur, which helped India amass 319 runs for 5 wickets in 40 overs, England openers put up a fighting display to score an eight wicket win, while Pakistan scored a 14-run win over Sri Lanka in the World Cup Cricket for the Blind on Thursday.
Put into bat, India scored 319 in 40 overs, including 46 extras. In reply, England made 320 runs for two wickets in 36.2 overs. In the other match, Pakistan, opting to bat, made 224 all out in 34 overs and skittled out Sri Lanka for 205 in 37.5 overs. Chasing a target of eight runs per over, England openers Heindrich Swanepoel and Nathan Foy stayed on course, making 206 runs for the first wicket in 25.1 overs, before the former was bowled by Shekar Nayak for 68 (74 balls 3x4). Nathan Foy, who top scored with 62 runs on Wednesday before losing to defending champions, South Africa, continued to be the mainstay for the English. After captain Adam Benjamin was run out by Shekar Nayak for four, Foy and Timothy Guttridge (36 not out - 23 balls 2x4) assured victory for the visitors. Foy remained unbeaten on 152 (131 balls, 13x4 1x6). Earlier, captain Ramkaran Sharma and Rajendra Verma, who opened the Indian innings, gave a good start, making 52 runs. India was 82 for three in 9.3 overs. Sushil Gaur and Shekar Nayak put on 129 runs for the fourth wicket. The latter was run out by David Wood, who accounted for three run outs. His individual 54 (63 balls) had five fours, while Gaur's unbeaten 110 came of 107 balls with five fours. Walsh and Swanepoel claimed a wicket each for England.
