London: David Byas announced on Wednesday his second retirement from first-class cricket after just one season as a Lancashire player.
Former Yorkshire captain Byas guided his native county to their first English county championship title for 33 years in 2001. He then announced his retirement from the game only to start the next season at Yorkshire's archrivals Lancashire in a move that stunned the Headingley faithful. But the 39-year-old left-handed batsman, whose family run a farm in Yorkshire, has decided not to accept first division Lancashire's offer of a new contract for next season. Lancashire, who have also seen former England batsman Neil Fairbrother announce his retirement, have signed Iain Sutcliffe from Leicestershire and Mal Loye from Northamptonshire in a bid to strengthen their top order.
