Waugh still counts on making it to World Cup squad

Sydney: "I'm obviously disappointed to miss out on a place in the 30-man squad as ever. Since I was originally left out of the One-day side it's been a goal of mine to get back into it," Australian Test captain Steve Waugh said on Monday after he failed to make the provisional 30-member squad.

"Having said that I still believe there is a chance I can make it to the World Cup as players can come from outside that 30-man squad to make the final "(Chief selector) Trevor Hohns spoke to me over the weekend to explain the decision and for now it's up to me to get over that disappointment and focus on what I can achieve in the immediate future. "That starts this week with the One-day game (for New South Wales) against England in Sydney." Waugh will equal Allan Border's world record of 156 Test appearances if he plays in the Boxing Day Test and in Sydney, and he would be expected to pass Border's Australian captaincy record of 32 Test victories. West Indian Clive Lloyd's world record of 36 still beckons, along with Waugh's desire to win a series in India, but the signs aren't good from Monday's announcements. "He would obviously be very disappointed with (missing the 30-man squad). You can never write someone like Steve Waugh off," One-day captain Ponting said.
