Karachi: Former Pakistan pacer Ata-ur-Rehman on Sunday said he had launched a court challenge against a life ban imposed on him after a match-fixing inquiry two years ago. "Yes, I have filed an appeal against the life ban in Lahore High court and hope to get justice," Rehman, 27, said. Rehman, who played 13 Tests and 30 One-day games between 1992-1996, was banned for life from playing international cricket on the ground of perjury after a match- fixing inquiry conducted by Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum between October 1998 to September 1999. Qayyum also recommended life ban on former captain Salim Malik and fined leading players Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar, Mushtaq Ahmed, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Akram Raza. Akram was also censured and inquiry recommended he should never captain Pakistan again. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) implemented the recommendations in May 2000. During his first testimony Rehman alleged Wasim gave him 300,000 Pakistan Rupees (around $ 5,000) for bowling below his standards during a One-day game in New Zealand on the 1993-94 tour. He twice changed his statements and was penalised on charges of perjury. Rehman has said he intends to start coaching.
