Kolkata: Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev on Friday came down heavily against unruly behaviour by spectators in the opening three One-dayers of the ongoing India-West Indies series saying that the country's name has been sullied by a handful of people.
"You can't insult your country in this way. India cannot be expected to win all the time. And just because India is losing you should not start behaving unsportingly," Kapil told reporters.Crowd trouble had resulted in the first One-dayer at Jamshedpur being almost abandoned, while the second at Nagpur was stopped for a brief while after spectators hurled missiles on the ground. The worst followed in the next outing at Rajkot when play had to be called off and the match awarded to India after spectators threw water bottles injuring West Indies pacer Vasbert Drakes. In this context, Kapil also referred to the India-Sri Lanka 1996 World Cup semi-final at the Eden Gardens, when the match had to be awarded to the visitors following crowd trouble. Kapil demanded that spectators indulging in such unseemly behaviour should be immediately 'thrown out' of the stadium and said it was also the duty of those sitting in the vicinity of such unsporting persons to protest."If someone next door tries to kill somebody, then you must try to stop him. If you don't, then it is criminal. India has a rich cultural tradition. But because of a handful of people, our reputation is being hurt," he said. PTI
