Kolkata: Former BCCI president Raj Singh Dungarpur on Thursday welcomed the formation of the Indian Cricket Players' Association (ICPA) and expressed hope that it would not meet the fate of an erstwhile players' body launched over a decade ago.
"It is a very good thing that ICPA has been formed. I hope it will not go the Association of Indian Cricketers (AIC) way that did not succeed due to regional bias," Durgarpur told reporters at the Eden Gardens. The AIC had been formed in 1989 following a dispute between the Indian Board and some top cricketers over a foreign trip, but it failed to attain the true representative character of a players body. Dungapur, who is here to attend the ICPA dinner this evening, echoed sentiments expressed by former skipper M A K Pataudi that ICPA would not have any confrontation with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). "I see no reason why the Board should not have harmonious relations with the organisation (ICPA)," he said while expressing confidence that all problems between players and the Board would be sorted out. "It is also good that the current Board president Jagmohan Dalmiya will attend the dinner," he said. Dungarpur emphasised the importance of top Indian cricketers saying that the International Cricket Council (ICC) could not afford to stage the International Championship without the top guns of Indian cricket. Interestingly, Dungarpur had volunteered to negotiate during a deadlock between the ICC and top Indian stars before the Champions trophy in Sri Lanka last month. Extras:
