South Australia thrashes Victoria in Sheffield Shield tie

Adelaide: South Australia (SA) crushed Victoria outright by 208 runs before tea on the final day of its opening Sheffield Shield match at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

The Victorians were dismissed for 303, with One-day International Ian Harvey top scoring with an unbeaten 63 and Darren Berry making 52. Their 94-run seventh-wicket partnership was the only major resistance provided by Victoria on the last day. SA's batting hero Ben Johnson, who top scored with 165 in the second innings total of 515 for six declared, snared the last three wickets of the match, and was named man-of-the-match. In Brisbane, Matthew Phelps and Michael Clarke posted centuries to drive New South Wales (NSW) towards innings points against champions Queensland. At stumps on the third day, NSW were 343 for four, needing another 165 runs to take the two innings points on Saturday's final day. Phelps (137 not out), batting through the day, and Clarke (134) knuckled down for a partnership of 233 for the third wicket on a day when runs and wickets were precious. The 21-year-old Clarke is regarded as one of the rising stars of Australian cricket and his innings on Friday confirmed that glowing reputation.
