TN posts emphatic win, other matches end in draw

Chennai: Tamil Nadu registered an emphatic victory over Kerala while matches between Goa and Hyderabad and Karnataka and Andhra ended in tame draws on the third and final day of South Zone U-19 Championship for Ghulam Ahmed Trophy on Friday.

Medium pacer Tamil Kumaran (3-15) and off spinner Abdul Mallick (3-40) helped the hosts to bundle out Kerala for 197 in the second innings and register an innings and 19 runs win. Overnight 50 for 2, Kerala, which was forced to follow on after being bundled out for 145 in reply to Tamil Nadu's 361-4 declared, put up some resistance through Mauzzam M Nathani (50-4x4), Krishna Chandran (60-4x6, 7x-4) and Vilas Kutty (27). Goa, overnight 220 for 6 in reply to Hyderabad's mammoth 425 for 4 declared in the first innings, was all out for 327. Despite off spinner Nalin Reddy's fiery spell of 8 for 128, Goa's Adtiya Angle (103) added 94 crucial runs for the seventh wicket with Santosh (23) to avoid a follow on. Hyderabad was 169 for 5 when the match ended in a draw. Tamil Nadu gained eight points to take its total to 15 from four matches while Kerala has just eight points with a lone win over Hyderabad in the round robin league. Hyderabad gained five points for an aggregate of 15 from four matches while Goa, who suffered three successive defeats, earned its first three points in four matches. Resuming at 39 for two in reply to Karnataka's first innings score of 313, Andhra was all out 214 with M Suresh (72-8x4) and A S K Varma (81-3x6, 7x4) offering resistance. Karnataka off spinner Udit Patel claimed five wickets for 58 runs while Vinu Prasad (3/59) and M Dharmichand (2/58) gave good support to him. Karnataka declared its second innings 96 for 4 with M Nitish top-scoring at 47, to set an impossible target of 195 to achieve in two overs, forcing the match to end in draw.
