Auckland: Former Auckland and New Zealand cricketer Warren Stott has been appointed fulltime cricket coach for the Falkland islands, a statement said on Thursday.
Stott's appointment will be funded by the Falklands Islands Shackleton Fund established to promote sport and leisure on the South Atlantic islands, the New Zealand Vintage Sports Trust statement said. Stott said many residents of the Falklands, with a population of around 3,000, play cricket. "I am not sure what to expect in the Falklands but am very excited to be visiting the cricket outback," said Stott. "Currently they play little overseas cricket but they are members of the Pan American cricket group and are hoping to develop a representative team in the future. "It could be the start of something good in the cricket world." Steve Tyldsley of the Falklands Cricket Association said they were excited to be getting a coach. "Over the last couple of years we have tried to develop cricket with under-16-year- old children. Sessions will be organised with groups from five to 30 children of all ages. "Warren will coach all our members but his emphasis will be on Senior School Children," said Tyldsley. Argentina invaded the Falklands in 1982. Britain sent in a military force and recaptured the islands.
