New Delhi: Police on Thursday claimed to have busted a highly organised betting racket during Wednesday's semi-final match between India and South Africa in the ICC Champions Trophy tournament, arresting one person who had been allegedly conducting 'satta' (taking bets) on cricket matches for the past two years. Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid through a decoy customer and just as the racket's kingpin Mahender Goel struck a deal with him, a raid was conducted at his Naraina Vihar residence, deputy commisioner of police Dinesh Bhatt told reporters.Interrogation of arrested Goel revealed that he had been conducting betting on cricket matches for more than two years, Bhatt said. On the stakes involved, Bhatt said, "If a person booking a 'satta' of Rs 1,000 wins, he gets Rs 1,600 and if he loses, his money is forgone. Since yesterday's match was sensational, betting was at its maximum." Police also seized three mobile phones, two telephones, one laptop, two voice recorders and a television during the search conducted at the house of the accused.
