London: Former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath took four wickets in seven balls, including a hat-trick, on the second day of Leicestershire's first division match against already crowned County Champions Surrey at The Oval. Surrey seemed set for a score in excess of 500 on Thursday when Srinath, 33, reduced the host from 493 for six to 494 all out. First England leg spinner Ian Salisbury was bowled for a fourth ball duck. Then England medium-fast bowler Jimmy Ormond (nought), formerly of Leicestershire, faced the same number of balls before being caught by second slip Darren Stevens off the last ball of the over. Srinath bowled Surrey captain Adam Hollioake (20) with the first ball of his next over before completing his hat-trick when last man Philip Sampson's stumps were knocked over with the batsman playing no stroke. Srinath finished with fine figures of five for 114 off 26.2 overs, an analysis all the more impressive after his first day's work had seen him take just one for 70 off 18 overs. At stumps Leicestershire was 303 for five with England discard Darren Maddy 109 not out. After India's tour of the West Indies in June, Srinath announced his retirement from Test cricket although he did say he would be available for next year's World Cup in South Africa. Despite repeated pleas from India captain Saurav Ganguly to change his mind, Srinath stuck to his decision. He did not feature in the recently concluded four-Test campaign in England where his wicket-taking ability might well have turned a 1-1 draw into an India series victory. Elsewhere on Thursday, Australia captain Steve Waugh added just 10 runs to his overnight 136 as Kent made 399 all out in its First Division clash against already relegated 2001 champions Yorkshire at Headingley. There was more misery for the Yorkshire faithful as their side were bowled out for 219. Yorkshire, following on, was 13 for one when bad light stopped play. At Hove, Sussex's former Zimbabwe batsman Murray Goodwin followed up his first innings 93 with 111 as the south coast club finished the second day on 166 for four against second-placed Warwickshire. South African Neil Carter had earlier helped the midlands side recover from 69 for five to 293 all out with a dashing 109. Lancashire thrashed Somerset by eight wickets inside two days at Taunton, Australian batsman Stuart Law unbeaten at the close on 57. In the second division, Nottinghamshire secured promotion to the top flight against Essex with two bonus bowling points. That was enough to see Nottinghamshire go up after rivals Worcestershire let three batting bonus points slip through its grasp against Derbyshire. On Wednesday, Essex itself made certain of top flight cricket next season with three bowling points, Middlesex having already claimed the other promotion spot on offer.
