Bangalore: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has strongly supported the staging of the forthcoming tri-nation series in Nairobi between Pakistan, Australia and Kenya, according to an official press release.

This is in response to statements issued by the Kenyan Sports Minister, who has stated that the series is not to proceed as the Kenyan government does not recognise the authority of the Kenya Cricket Association. The ICC would urge the Kenyan government and Kenya Cricket Association to put any issues behind them and work together for the benefit of Kenyan cricket and for the ICC World Cup in 2003, the release said. "This series is a marvellous opportunity to showcase Kenyan cricket. Kenya is one of 14 nations participating in the ICC World Cup 2003 in South Africa in February 2003. The opportunity to host and play against two of the best One-day International teams in the world will give Kenya's preparation for the World Cup a massive boost," ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said on Thursday. Kenya is scheduled to host two matches in the World Cup. "It is important that this dispute is resolved so as to remove uncertainty concerning Kenya's right to host World Cup matches," Speed said. Kenya has applied for full member status of ICC, which would entitle it to play Test matches against the other full members. Currently Kenya is the only country in world cricket that has One-day International status. This entitles Kenya to play official Limited Over matches against the 10 full members of ICC, the official release said.
