Kolkata: Australian Test skipper Steve Waugh on Wednesday hailed Indian captain Saurav Ganguly and his team for their brilliant performances on the field while suggesting that the cricketing stars should take up charity work to put their celebrity status to good use.
"Saurav is doing a great job. He is playing better away than what he played at home. The team is winning abroad which is very significant. He is getting a lot of support from his teammates," Waugh told reporters during his visit to Udayan, a home for children of leprosy patients at Barrackpore. He, however, suggested that alongside the brilliant performances on the field, the Indian players should make their mark off the field as well. "I cannot speak for the Indian cricket team. All I have to say is that people in high position, the celebrities, have an obligation to help people who are less fortunate," he said. Asked if the charity missions were a prelude to his retirement from international cricket, Waugh, who has been dropped from his country's One-day side along with twin brother Mark, said "I like cricket. I get lot of enjoyment from the game. I would like to continue. "Charity, on the other hand, is also important. Each has its own time. I have a family back home who are very keen on charity." Waugh, who had sponsored the construction of the girls' wing of Udayan, was on a two-day visit to the city for selection of a suitable site for another home for daughters of leprosy patients.
