Bangalore: Former Ranji Trophy cricketer J Abhiram has been appointed the new coach of the Karnataka cricket team.
He would take over from former India wicket-keeper Syed Kirmani, who was coaching the side in the last two seasons, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) president, K M Ramprasad, said on Wednesday. Ramprasad said Abhiram's appointment would be finalised at a managing committee meeting of KSCA on Saturday. Abhiram would be assisted by Rajesh Kamath in coaching, he added. Ramprasad, who is also vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), indicated that Kirmani's services were likely to be utilised as a wicket- keeping coach for the Zonal Academies of the National Cricket Academy. Preparing the side for the KSCA Diamond Jubilee tournament scheduled for next month is Abhiram's first assignment. Former Ranji champions Karnataka had finished fourth in the South Zone last season behind Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad, to be relegated to the plate group, in place this season. Extras:
