Mumbai: After having bowled the nation over with his histrionics in cricket, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is now all set to having his finger put into the culinary business by lending his name to an upmarket restaurant that opens in October.
The 5,000 sq feet restaurant, currently under construction near Regal theatre in South-Mumbai, would not only have the master batsman's name 'Tendulkars' but also the ace cricketer's 51 per cent stake in it. Conceptualised as savvy restaurant with a Scandavian look, the restaurant would have some of the finest cricket memorabilia as well as some of the places like lounge dubbed as 'The Oval' for that perfect feel for cricket buffs interested in hanging around a joint that has their favourite batsman's backing. Reputed hotelier Sanjay Narang, who is teaming up with Tendulkar in the business said the idea of starting a global chain of hotels carrying Tendulkar's name, was originally floated by Sachin's agent and World Tel chief Mark Mascarenhas. "Mark had approached us to run the restaurant under the brand name `Tendulkars'," he said. "But Sachin evinced keen interest in the project even after Mark's demise in a car accident last year," Narang said. "I met Sachin at least 5-6 times to chalk out the details of the joint venture for setting up international style contemporary cuisine restaurant," he said. Besides international menu, the proposed restaurant would have the food Sachin likes, Narang added. "Sachin is a good gourmet. Having travelled a lot, he has developed good taste of international cuisine. Our hotel's menu would reflect Tendulkar's global appeal," Narang said. "It was Sachin who played the pivotal role while finalising the menu and also the look of the restaurant," he added. The restaurant would have a grand entrance besides three distinct activity areas, a waiting lounge overseeing the main dining area dominated by a table for 11, a children's area aesthetically decorated with toys, games and even a special menu that would tickle the taste buds of the youngsters. The restaurant would also have informal spaces dotted with sofas on one side and table for twos on the other side. A bar behind the lounge would also be the highlight of the restaurant. "It was Sachin, who floated the concept, Narang said adding, "Even though he has a majority 51 per cent stake, he has engaged us to manage the venture as he will not look after the day-to-day business." Similar restaurants would be opened in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. "After an year or so, other hotels in the chain would be opened at Sydney and London," Narang added. Extras:
