Bangalore: New Zealand will commence its first of the two-Test series against West Indies on the June 21 at Bridgetown. This will be followed up by the second Test at St George, Grenada on June 28.
In the 10 Test series that have taken place between the two teams, West Indies has an upper hand having won five, lost two and drawn three. It has also an unenviable record of not losing a single series or a Test at home. Its two series losses have all come only in away series in 1979-80 and in 1999-00 - the latter under the captaincy of Brian Lara when West Indies had lost almost all its glamour of past stalwarts. West Indies after a comfortable 2-1 victory in the recently concluded series against India is looking forward to face New Zealand, albeit the One-day series loss against India. And in the recently concluded One-dayers against New Zealand, it has regained composure by clinching the series 3-1 margin. However it has a score to settle against New Zealand in the Test series as it suffered a humiliating series defeat in New Zealand in 1999-00 when it lost both the Tests. New Zealand has a very poor record in West Indies as it has not registered a victory on Caribbean soil in 50 years - to be exact dating back from February 8, 1952 when the first ever Test between the two countries took place. Added to this it has to overcome the loss against Pakistan at Lahore in the recent two-Test series, which was abandoned due to bomb blast. New Zealand's only happiest memory in West Indies has been way back in 1971-72 in its first ever away series when it managed to draw all the five Tests. So an interesting duel is on the cards from June 21 provided the rain God does not intervene. Given below are some of the stats confining to New Zealand-West Indies Test series:
