English cricketers to inaugurate Tangiers Stadium

Morocco: The newly built cricket stadium in Tangiers will come alive to cheers for the first time later this month when a team of professional cricket players from England will play the inaugural match at the Tangiers Cricket Stadium in Morocco, according to an official press release from International Cricket Council (ICC).

The players include Iqbal Siddiqui, Asif Mujtaba, Salim Ilahi, Nadeem Khan and Fazle Akber, Pradeep Hewage, Mike Dale, Gary Stanyer. The professionals, comprising of Test, international and first class players will play two One-day 50 over matches at Tangiers on June 11 and 12. Announcing the dates for the tournament, Moha Boujlil, secretary, Federation Royale Morocaine de Cricket (FRMC), said, "It is indeed heartening to note that even before the first international match has been hosted at this venue, notable players from England have expressed interest in playing at Morocco. This reflects the immense faith players of international calibre have in our facilities. This, we are sure, is only the first of many benchmarks that the state- of-the-art Tangiers Cricket Stadium will set in the future." The cricket stadium at Tangiers offers modern cricketing facilities that are at par with international standards. The square, outfield and playing area have all been designed to conform to the ICC standard playing conditions. The stadium facilities include five turf wickets for matches; five turf and two cement wickets in the practice areas; amenities for the players, umpires and referee; TV room and facilities for both media and spectators.. "Cricket will become even more enjoyable in the beautiful country of Morocco and the players will undoubtedly love this venue which boasts of picturesque mountain ranges, river valleys, beautiful sandy coasts and wide expanses of desert," Boujilil added. ICC match referee Mike Procter is scheduled to visit Morocco on June 15 and 16 to inspect the facilities at the newly established stadium. Approval as an official ICC- sanctioned venue would allow it to host events featuring full-member countries. The Tangiers Stadium is set to host its first triangular One-day series between South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka from August 12 to 21.
