Why are some players treated as less than equal?

India made history when for the very first time it scored an emphatic seven-wicket win over the West Indians at Kensington Oval. The victory, no doubt came as a huge relief to millions of Indian fans as much as Saurav Ganguly and his teammates surely.

Amazingly, the men responsible for it happened to be left-handed batsman Dinesh Mongia, who scored a characteristic, rock solid 74 and speedster Tinu Yohannan, who more or less clinched it for India by scalping three West Indian wickets with his accurate and lively bowling. What is most refreshing about the achievement of these two youngsters is that this has been their first opportunity after sitting on the reserve bench for the past two months almost. Lesser mortals could have simply gone to pieces with that sort of harassment! While Tinu should have been the man-of-the-match in my opinion, must say, Dinesh Mongia's attitude was a joy to watch. The best thing about Dinesh is the way he plans and paces his innings, always seeming to be in full control of the situation. He never looks spectacular like Sehwag but at the same time he never looks vulnerable like Sehwag too. He showed a positive frame of mind when he executed a short-arm pull as he arrived and later put the gentle off spin of Hooper in its place, sweeping him and then lofting him straight. Mongia presented a picture of a man brimming with confidence and it was quite pleasing to watch this Punjab left-hander establish himself in only his third innings overseas.
