Queensland, Tasmania to fight out Sheffield Shield final

Brisbane: Queensland and Tasmania will lock horns in the Sheffield Shield final starting at the 'Gabba Ground next week after both sides completed outright victories on Friday in qualifying matches ending a day early.

Queensland fought back from a 41-run first-innings deficit to beat Victoria by five wickets in a tense match here, thanks largely to a resolute second-innings 61 by Martin Love. Chasing 164 for victory in its second innings, Queensland limped home with five wickets to spare after many uncertain moments. Tasmania ensured it would be Queensland's rivals in the showdown when it thrashed New South Wales by 10 wickets in Hobart. Tasmania's pace bowler Shane Jurgensen crowned a wonderful game by snatching a hat- trick as he captured five for 38 in the New South Wales second innings of 238 for a marvellous aggregate of 11-103 against the Test-depleted visitors. The Queensland and Tasmanian wins - both on the third day of games scheduled for four days - ended the hopes of Western Australia and South Australia of sneaking into the final by securing a full-point result in Perth. The outcome of the WACA Ground encounter will now have no bearing on the final. Western Australia went to stumps with a second-innings 220 for five, leading by 265, with little left-hander Chris Rogers unbeaten on 83 - just 17 runs short of achieving the rare feat of two centuries in the same Shield match. Rogers, son of former New South Wales batsman and selector John Rogers, made an unbeaten 101 in the first innings.
