Bangalore: Sri Lanka amassed 509 runs in a single day creating a world record for most number of runs scored in a day's play by a team in Test cricket in the first Test against Bangladesh on July 22.

The previous best was 503 for two, which England had scored on June 30, 1924 - which also happened to be on the second day of the Test, against South Africa at Lord's.

Sri Lanka had scored 32/0 at the end of the first day's play on July 21 in reply to Bangladesh's meagre total of 161 and finished the second day's play at 541 for 9.
