Rain plays spoilsport, ties washed out at World Cup
Chennai: Rains, on Friday played a spoilsport washing out the Australia versus England and South Africa versus Sri Lanka matches, at the Petro World Cup for the Blind 2002. England had won the toss and put Australian to bat but barely a ball was bowled when the umpires P Chandrasekaran and B Das called off the play due to heavy rain. The rain caught everyone by surprise. Chennai had not experienced rains for nearly three weeks now though the northeast monsoon, which set in October, was at the waning period. When play was called off Australian RSS Moxly and C J Backstrom were at the crease. Moxly was batting on one. However, in the match between South Africa and Sri Lanka, the Proteas had scored 66 losing the wicket of R M U D Lakshan, who was run out. He had scored 20 runs. When the play was called off due to rains R P S Rajapaksha was not out 28 and J Srikantha was at crease with 18. Rajapaksha's 28 came with the help of two fours, while Lakshan's 20 came by means of couple of fours. Both had faced 49 deliveries apiece to reach their respective scores. All the four teams were awarded two points each.
